In fact, Smith Corona is now the largest thermal label manufacturer that makes their own adhesive and sells factory direct. And since we manage our supply chain in-house, we avoid the middlemen and pass on incredible savings to our customers.įast-forward to 2019, and Smith Corona has now established itself as an industry leader in production of blank 4圆 labels. The result is innovative, long-lasting thermal labels at surprisingly low prices. Today, Smith Corona has poured its print know-how into the label market. ![]() As the typewriter market collapsed in the 1980s-2000s, Smith Corona's leadership looked for a new product line and found that it was a natural transition to bring our expertise at putting ink on paper to the thermal label industry. Unfortunately, the PC revolution virtually eliminated the need for the product that had made Smith Corona famous and several restructurings and buyouts resulted. It led the way in the word processing industry, creating spell-check and other technologies that were later used in personal computers. In the 1970s and 80s, Smith Corona developed innovations for typewriter cartridges, ribbons, electronic typewriters, and word processors. The combination of LC Smith's durable office typewriters and Corona's popular portable machines made the new firm an industry leader and helped them to remain profitable even during the Great Depression. merged with the Corona Typewriter Company. The Smith brothers' typewriter business went through some reconfigurations and changes to its name in the decades that followed, and, in 1926, L. Smith founded the Smith Premier Typewriter Company, in order to produce Brown's forward-thinking dual-case typewriter design. In 1886, Lyman Cornelius (LC) Smith, Wilbert Smith, Hurlbut W. Brown, an inventor working for the brothers, approached them with his own mechanical typewriter design. Its features include interchangeable platens, non-glare key rings, half-spacing escapement, decimal tabulator, stencil device and improved variable spacer. Noticing that some of the mechanical processes and manufacturing techniques employed at the firearms factory mirrored those present in the emerging production of typewriters, Alexander T. Smith boasted this machine as both Standard and Silent. It all depends who sees it and how much they want it.Before the Smith brothers helped change the world with typewriters, they manufactured firearms. Certain models will always bring a decent price (such as a Hermes 3000, a typewriter with script typeface, or a pink machine), but even those are subject to change. The typewriter market fluctuates so much that it is really hard to give an exact number. As others have said, it is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It's a bit of a niche market, but salable nonetheless. However, someone who really likes the Corona line, or depression era machines in general, would be interested in it. Someone that wants a typewriter to type with probably wouldn't purchase this model. These sort of typewriters are fairly collectable, but only to the right people. I have a Comet Deluxe and, while it is missing many features, still FEELS like a Corona, you know? They lack all the bells and whistles of a standard portable typewriter, although the typing action is nearly the same.Ĭorona actually came out with a few other depression models namely, the Comet and the Comet DeLuxe. Other companies, such as Underwood and Royal, put out machines that are near replicas of this one. ![]() Just one of the many depression era portables put out. ![]()
